Project Update: Name of the Wind (Poster)

I actually like the original composition sketch for this piece better than this more developed version. I will probably take a break because something isn’t working and I am having a hard time putting my finger on it. But I am pretty happy with the shadows – color is still pretty hard for me. Ambrose also looks a bit too fragile, though he does look like a total ass; I’ll take small victories.

As I was coloring this I began A Wise Man’s Fear, the second book in the Kingkiller Chronicles by Patrick Rothfuss. I may revise this version a bit and branch this into a triptych. I was really inspired by the documentary, “Drew: The Man Behind the Poster” about Drew Struzan and some of his famous film posters, the most iconic of which is Star Wars. While I am leagues away from that talent, it did prompt me to do a small study on composition and come up with the idea to compose this piece like a film poster and possibly incorporate the second and future, third books into their own pieces. But that is a ways off 🙂
